Flat Screen TVs: Things to Consider

THE BASICS

High definition flat screen TVs are available in plasma or LCD (liquid-crystal display). The difference between them is the technology that creates the picture. Many advances have been made to ensure that the two are comparable in quality and price. But there are some factors to consider.

Plasma TVs have vivid colors and great contrast. The picture can be seen from almost ever angle. The downside is that light can be reflected onto the screen, causing glare and obscuring what’s on the screen. Static images can also create burn-ins so this is why you should avoid leaving anything on pause for long periods of time.

LCD TVs have considerably less glare and reflection. They can be viewed in just about any lighting and burn-ins are not a problem. The downside is a limited viewing range, which means looking at the screen from certain angles will cause the picture to lose contrast.

SIZES

Plasma TVs typically range from 42″ to 60″. LCD TVs range from in 23″ to 60″. For plasma screens, the larger the model, the better quality the picture tends to be.

You should be conscious of where you plan to use the television. A living room television should usually be a minimum of 37″ to ensure that a large number of people will be able to see the screen. The audience should sit at least 4 feet away from a 40″-47″ screen and at least 6 feet away from a 50+” screen.
