Human Rights Water Charity Needs Your Help

1 BILLION people don't have regular, safe access to a source of clean water? DIGDEEP is a human rights based water charity that defends the human right to water for all people.

Human society is faced with a water access crisis.  Did you know that nearly 1,000,000,000, (ONE BILLION) don't have regular, safe access to a source of clean water?  That's nearly 1 out of 7 people walking around on this planet.  Contaminated drinking water and a lack of sanitation account for nearly 80% of all disease worldwide killing nearly 4500 children A DAY! Over 433 MILLION schooldays are lost to water-related illnesses.  A lack of water and sanitation costs Africa 28 BILLION annually, nearly triple what the US offers the region in foreign aid. In Africa, the task of water collection often falls to women and children, who are forced to sacrifice opportunities for education, family care and economic activity - while risking their health and personal security on long trips to distant boreholes.  Some women spend more time on collecting water than any other task in their daily routine.  Children miss out on school to help and women miss out on the opportunity to work and contribute for their family.

The Bright Side

When we help people exercise their right to water, individuals and communities are transformed. Here's how:

With Health:

  • Simple hygiene, taught in conjunction with well construction and proper sanitation, can cut the number of water‐related deaths by 65%.
  • Creating access to a clean source of water at home eliminates the possibility of contracting diseases like e‐coli, cholera and hepatitis from unsafe sources.
  • Regular water consumption reduces the risk of dehydration, regulates body temperature, moves vital nutrients, protects the organs, promotes healing, and helps ensure good health.

With Life:

  • Clean water and sanitation encourage school attendance, especially among girls. Education means a greater chance for future economic success. It also equips men and women with the tools they need to positively impact their communities.
  • Access to a local source of water may mean that a young boy or girl avoids an instance of rape, kidnapping or forced labor during travel.
  • Extra household water can be used to keep a garden or small animal – new tool to help a family achieve economic and food security.

With Community:

  • The construction of water and sanitation facilities is often accompanied by the establishment of democratic well governance, inclusive of women and minorities.
  • Every dollar invested in a water/sanitation project can be expected to generate $8-12 in economic returns. Often, water access is the only natural constraint to local economic growth.
  • When women and children don't have to travel to collect water, their communities are safer, more stable, and more economically productive.

Access to safe, clean water is a basic, human need and therefore a fundamental human right.  The rights to water and sanitation have been broadly recognized to exist in international law.  DigDeep uses these rights to foster access to water worldwide.

We Need Your Help

We are always looking for volunteers to help leave their mark on doing a great thing in this world and this is the perfect opportunity to do it.  We need people interested in helping out and participating in events that help us experience water poverty and better understand our valuable resource.  WATER changes everything.  We are looking for inspired individuals, groups or teams to take on the challenge of fundraising a well project.  While asking for help for our mission, volunteers will be raising awareness about the 1 Billion people on earth that don't have access to clean water and moreover doing something to really help.  100% of the funds raised goes towards building wells in each community to have access to clean water forever!

Keep an eye out for DIGDEEP's Walk 4 Water coming in October. There is so much for us all to learn regarding our world, health, economics, water poverty, human rights and our environment all interwined in this mission. It may be a truly significant, life-changing opportunity for any individual wanting to do good.

Just $20.00 gives water for life to 1 person.  If you would like to donate, please visit our website at www.digdeepwater.org/legacy and you can "Give" or "Raise" money to help.
