TRUMBULL, CT — About a dozen residential burglaries have been reported in Trumbull over the past few months, according to police.

In a news release, Police Lt. Brian Weir said Monday the department is aware of a recent rash of residential burglaries occurring at night in Trumbull and other neighboring communities.

"These burglars are breaking into homes and rummaging through them when nobody appears to be home," Weir said in a news release. "There have been a few of these burglary attempts which have been halted after an entry attempt has been made, but the thieves discovered that occupants are actually home. In these instances, the thieves have fled."

Approximately a dozen of these burglaries have occurred between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. over the past few months, Weir said. No confrontations between the burglars and homeowners have occurred thus far in Trumbull.

Weir also noted these crimes have become more frequent after the recent time change due to daylight saving time, causing it to get darker earlier in the evening.

"Trumbull police are working together with other law enforcement agencies to determine patterns and similarities in attempts to put an end to these crimes and apprehend those that are responsible," Weir said.

According to Weir, there are a number of ways residents can protect their homes and valuables:

  • Communicate with your neighbors and the police to report any suspicious people, vehicles, or noises.
  • Turn on lights to limit any cover of darkness.
  • Make sure burglar alarms, or video surveillance systems are in working order and set them to active when they detect any motion. Once you are alerted, call the police immediately.
  • Secure money, jewelry, documents and any other valuables in safes, and keep them securely fastened in hidden locations.

We urge the public to be vigilant, and look out for each other, especially your neighbors," Weir said. "If you see any suspicious vehicles, persons, or activities do not intervene, but call the police immediately."
