FCIAC Girls Semifinals Set For Tuesday At Ludlowe

Trumbull faces Stamford in first semifinal at 6 p.m. and top seed Danbury takes on Wilton at 7:30 p.m.

On Feb. 13, the Danbury girls basketball team posted a hard-fought 43-40 victory over Trumbull to clinch the top seed for the FCIAC playoffs.

It was one of only two games this season for the undefeated Hatters that were decided by less than 10 points. The other was a 64-58 victory over Wilton on Feb. 10.

If forms holds, the Hatters and Eagles will meet in an FCIAC championship game rematch on Thursday at Fairfield Ludlowe.

Trumbull, the defending FCIAC champion, held off Trinity Catholic 52-46 to reach the semifinals. Erin Moore scored 20 points, including a 12-of-14 effort from the foul line, to lead the Eagles while Alexa Pfohl added 13 points.

Stamford upset No. 2 seed St. Joseph 44-25 behind 18 points from Kelsey Cognetta and 13 from Kelsey Santagata. St.  Joseph played most of the game without leading scorer Nancy Stablein, who suffered a knee injury in the first minute and did not return.

Danbury, which is seeking its first FCIAC girls basketball title, fought off upset-minded Darien 63-40 to advance to the final four.

Rebecca Gartner scored 24 points and Rachel Gartner added 16 for the Hatters, who ended the game with a 21-2 run.

Wilton, making its first FCIAC appearance since 2003, moved on with a 49-47 win over No. 5 seed Norwalk.

Casey Pearsall scored 24 points and Maddy Fulton added 16 for the Warriors, who won their only previous FCIAC championship in 1989.

Stamford, which lost to Trumbull 52-33 in the regular-season meeting, claimed its only two FCIAC crowns in 1978 and 1979.

Trumbull defeated Ridgefield in last year's FCIAC final to garner its first league championship. Between them, the four semifinalists only have a  combined four FCIAC titles.  Stamford has two and Wilton and Trumbull one each.
