Hartford Courant Endorses Trumbull First Selectman Tim Herbst for State Treasurer

The Courant endorsed Herbst after noting the state has the highest average annual pension in the nation and 2nd highest underfunded pension.

The Hartford Courant endorsed Trumbull Republican First Selectman Tim Herbst for state treasurer on Monday.

The Courant applauded incumbent Democrat Denise Nappier’s efforts to repair the reputation of the position and her willingness to invest locally. However, the paper noted that the state has the second most underfunded pension system in the nation and state retirees have the highest average annual pension of any state in the nation.

Herbst on the other hand took the reins in Trumbull and moved new hires to a 401(k)-style plan and identified savings to eliminate a deficit. The Courant editorial board endorsed Herbst because the state needs someone like Rhode Island treasurer Gina Raimondo, who told voters the state couldn’t maintain pension promises.
