June Opening Planned For 8 New Pickleball Courts In Trumbull

The town's recreation program manager said these new lit courts can be used after sunset, which will allow for longer playing times.

TRUMBULL, CT — The town plans to increase the number of pickleball courts in Trumbull from 12 to 20 next month, according to town officials.

According to Recreation Program Manager Noreen Wilpiszeski, eight new lit courts are scheduled to open at the Tashua Recreation Area in mid-June.

"The new courts are currently curing and will be painted soon," Wilpiszeski said in an email to Patch. "Two of the previous tennis courts [at Tashua Recreation Area] were converted into the eight pickleball courts, and two lit full-sized tennis courts remain."

The sport continues to be a popular seasonal activity among residents, and the addition of more courts in town, specifically lit ones, will allow more residents to spend time playing it.

"Pickleball is currently one of the most popular activities in Trumbull," Wilpiszeski said. "The addition of these courts in the north end of town will allow for longer playing time as they will be utilized after sunset."

According to Wilpiszeski, approximately 200 program participants currently partake in various pickleball programs in town, including lessons for beginners. Additionally, over 50 resident permits are distributed weekly in the month of May.

"We are lucky that we are able to offer pickleball players so many lit courts," Wilpiszeski said. "Many of the surrounding towns still have dual usage courts, like we did, with lines for both tennis and pickleball painted on the same court."

Wilpiszeski described pickleball as a multigenerational sport played outside from March to December, depending on the weather.

The town's Parks and Recreation Department also partnered with the Trumbull Board of Education this past winter to offer non-instructional indoor pickleball from November to March and plan to do so again this upcoming winter, Wilpiszeski said.

With the addition of eight more pickleball courts in town, Trumbull will soon have more courts than most towns in Connecticut, according to the town website.

To maximize usage of its courts, the town is modifying some of its rules of operation. A full list of clarifications and changes can be found here.
