Legislators Honor Flag Day In Trumbull, Ceremony Scheduled For Friday

TRUMBULL, CT — State Reps. David Rutigliano, Ben McGorty and Tony Scott are wrapping up their month-long flag collection in honor of Flag Day and in cooperation with the Trumbull American Legion Post #141 this week.

The Trumbull lawmakers held an in-person drive-by flag collection for worn and tattered flags Saturday at Middlebrook Elementary School, according to a news release provided by House Republicans.

The drop-off locations for worn flags, which will be open through June 13, are:

  • Trumbull Town Hall, 5866 Main Street, Trumbull
  • Trumbull Library, 33 Quality Street, Trumbull
  • Fairchild-Nichols Memorial Library, 1718 Huntington Turnpike, Trumbull

The collected worn, faded and tattered American flags were given to the American Legion for the annual Flag Day flag retirement ceremony with the Trumbull VFW Post #10059 scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. at Indian Ledge Park Maintenance Facility on Indian Ledge Park Road in Trumbull.

The Second Continental Congress adopted the first American flag on July 14, 1777, and President Woodrow Wilson declared June 14 to be Flag Day in 1916. National Flag Day was then established by an Act of Congress in August 1949, according to the Trumbull lawmakers.

The U.S. Flag Code specifies that old American flags no longer in service must be properly disposed.
