Man Finds Bag Of Cash On Ground, Charged With Stealing Lost Tax Money: Trumbull Police

A lost bag of nearly $5,000 cash in tax money was found on the ground by a Trumbull man, police said, adding he is now charged with larceny.

TRUMBULL, CT — A Trumbull man is charged with larceny after he found and kept a bag containing almost $5,000 in town tax money that was dropped outside a local bank, according to police.

Robert Withington, 56, of Placid Street, was charged Friday with third-degree larceny following a lengthy investigation into the theft of several thousands dollars cash in town tax receipt funds, police said.

The probe began after an incident May 30, when an employee of the Tax Collector Office lost the deposit bag while making a delivery to the bank on Quality Street, according to police. The bag was marked with the bank’s insignia and contained documents that identified the town as the owner of its contents, police said.
