Police: Latvian Man Bought $6k of Goods at Trumbull Best Buy with Fake Card

The man allegedly attempted to flee the country after law enforcement figured out his identity.

A Latvian national was arrested after he allegedly purchased more than $6,000 worth of items at Best Buy in Trumbull using fraudulent credit cards.

The investigation started on August 21, 2014 after police got a call from Best Buy employees about fraudulent credit card use. Police arrested a person who allegedly attempted to purchase more than $6,000 in Apple products and gift cards from the store.

Employees realized that a very similar incident occurred the day before and a man successfully purchased more than $6,000 in Apple products and Best Buy gift cards.

Trumbull Police worked with other federal law enforcement agencies including Immigration and Customs Enforcement to determine the identity of the perpetrator who made off with the goods.

ICE found that a few people from Latvia flew into a Texas airport at the same time and were able to figure out the identity of the man who successfully bought goods on August 20.

Kristaps Freimanis, 26, was served a warrant while in the custody of New York authorities on other criminal charges. He was extradited to Connecticut where he faces charges of third-degree larceny, credit card theft, illegal use of a credit card, receiving goods with a fraudulent credit card, second-degree identity theft and criminal impersonation.

ICE confiscated his passport because he was attempting to flee the country, police said. He was held on bond.
