Repairs to 'Dangerous' Trumbull Playground Cut from Capital Budget

Estimates placed fix-it costs at about $250,000.

The playground at Indian Ledge Park in Trumbull will continue to go without much-needed repairs after the Board of Finance’s recent cut of $250,000 from the town’s capital budget.

Portions of the playground have been taped off to alert parents and their children that it could be considered unsafe, and First Selectman Tim Herbst is not happy about the board’s decision.

“It’s a dangerous playground right now,” Herbst told the Trumbull Times. “I’ve had plenty of parents call my office to complain about it, but they really should take it up with the Board of Finance. … They’re the ones who don’t want to spend the money.”

The board voted last week to bond about $5 million for non-school capital improvements, cutting about $2.5 million from the request, including funds for the playground repair.

“It strikes me as absurd to pay $250,000 for a playground, no matter how well used it may be. If it’s a safety issue, then we need to shut it down until it’s fixed, but there has to be an alternative to $250,000,” Board chairwoman Elaine Hammers told the Trumbull Times.
