TRUMBULL, CT — A man accused of pointing a loaded gun at a driver in a Target parking lot during a "road rage incident" was arrested Saturday, according to police.

In a news release, Police Lt. Brian Weir said officers were called to the Hawley Lane parking lot around 3 p.m. in response to a reported road rage incident involving a gun.

Officers met with a driver who told police a car driven by Robert Butler, 27, of Bridgeport, tried to cut them off as they were driving through the parking lot. Butler then pulled his car next to the other driver's vehicle and words were exchanged between both drivers, Weir said.

Butler then pointed the barrel of a handgun at the other driver and left the area, Weir said. He also called police to report the incident and returned to the parking lot a short time later.

According to Weir, Butler told police when he stopped his car, the other vehicle almost struck his ca from behind.

The other driver then pulled up next to his car, stopped and pointed towards Butler, however Butler was unable to see what the other driver was holding. Butler told police that was when he pulled out a gun stored inside his backpack, Weir said.

Officers found a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun on the passenger's seat of his car. The gun had eight 9mm bullets in the magazine, and one loose 9mm bullet was found inside Butler's backpack, Weir said.

No other guns were found and no injuries were reported, Weir said.

Butler was charged with first-degree threatening and second-degree breach of peace. He was held on a $20,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court later this month, Weir said.
