Rough Night For FCIAC In Girls State Tourney Play
Five of the six FCIAC teams in action were beaten, leaving Danbury and Wilton, which plays on Friday, as the only league teams still alive

Thursday was a rough night for the FCIAC in the girls basketball state tournament as only of the league's six teams in action advanced to the quarterfinals.
The lone FCIAC squad to survive was top seed and undefeated Danbury, which defeated Sacred Heart Academy 56-46 in the second round of the Class LL tournament to improve to 25-0.
Otherwise, Trumbull, St. Joseph, Norwalk and Staples fell in Class LL while Trinity Catholic, the No. 14 seed in Class M, lost to No. 3 Ellington, 49-40.

The defeats by No. 12 Norwalk (64-57 to No. 5 Hillhouse) and No. 20 Staples (74-49 to No. 4 and defending state champion Career Magnet) were not unexpected.
However, No. 8 seed Trumbull bowed to No. 9 Newtown 57-48 at home in perhaps the most disappointing result of the night.

The Eagles were hoping to get another shot at Danbury after losing to the Hatters in the FCIAC finals.
No. 7 seed St. Joseph was routed at home by No. 10 Mercy 54-37 in a result that looks surprising on paper but perhaps shouldn't be considered an upset. The Cadets were playing without leading scorer Nancy Stablein, who suffered a season-ending torn ACL in the FCIAC playoffs.
Of the 13 FCIAC teams that made the state tournament, seven advanced to the second round. Of that group, only two are left --Danbury and Wilton, which plays at No. 7 RHAM in Hebron on Friday in the second round of the Class L tournament.
