St. Joseph Ousted From Class M Girls Soccer Tournament

Cadets fall to Northwest Catholic 4-1 in the semifials

After winning its first three games in the Class M state tournament by a combined margin of 21-1, the St. Joseph girls soccer team met its match Friday night.

Looking to advance to the final for the first time since winning their second consecutive state title in 2008, the fourth-seeded Cadets suffered a 4-1 loss to top-seeded Northwest Catholic at Waterbury's Municipal Stadium.

Northwest, which had a first-round bye, has been equally dominant, winning its three tournament games by a combined score of 19-2.

It will face Granby Memorial, the No. 2 seed, in the final next weekend. Granby Memorial advanced with a 2-1 win over No. 10 Suffield on Friday.

Michelle Medina scored two goals and Madison Borowiec and Nicole Medina each added one for Northwest Catholic, which broke open a 1-0 game at halftime by scoring three goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half to build a commanding 4-0 cushion.

Samantha Grasso scored midway through the second half for St. Joseph, the FCIAC regular-season champions, which concluded its year at 18-3-1.

Northwest shared the state championship in 2009 with Suffield.

Two FCIAC teams remain alive in the state tournament. Trumbull advanced to the Class LL final Friday with a 1-0 win over Newtown and will play the winner of Saturday's contest between Staples and top seed Glastonbury.
