Cadets suffer a 62-58 loss to the Hilltoppers after completing a 20-0 regular season

For the second straight year, the St. Joseph boys basketball team suffered a stunning loss in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC playoffs.

After completing just the second undefeated regular season in school history, the top-seeded Cadets dropped a 62-58 decision to No. 8 seed Bridgeport Central on Saturday night at Fairfield Ludlowe.

The defeat snapped a 24-game winning streak for the Cadets (20-1), who routed Central 92-56 in the regular season.

Central will take on crosstown rival Bassick, a winner over Westhill, in the FCIAC semifinals on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Fairfield Warde.

James Jennings scored 22 points and Timajh Parker added 16 for St. Joseph, which squandered a 20-lead in a quarterfinal loss to Stamford last season.

The Cadets, however, regrouped to win the Class LL state championship, so they will be looking for history to repeat itself.

Central built an 18-9 lead after the first quarter and led 36-25 at the intermission. St. Joseph climbed within 47-44 after the third period and gained a 58-57 lead with two minutes remaining.

Josh Wilkerson had 19 points to lead the Hilltoppers (12-8) while Robert Blackwell added 14 and Tyler Ancrum chipped in with 11 for Central.
