St. Joseph's Tyler Matakevich Named To Walter Camp All-State Team

Matakevich helped lead the Cadets to their second consecutive state championship

St. Joseph senior linebacker Tyler Matakevich has been named to the Walter Camp Football Foundation All-State team.

After missing the first five games of the season with an injury, Matakevich helped lead the Cadets to their second consecutive state championship with a 49-28 victory over Ansonia in the CIAC Class S title game.

He finished the year with 112 total tackles, including 47 unassisted stops. On offense, Matakevich rushed for 508 yards and 11 touchdowns and also caught 20 passes for 301 yards and five scores.

In addition, he scored four touchdowns in the state championship game win over Ansonia.

As part of its 44th annual Weekend festivities, the Walter Camp Football Foundation hosted a High School “Breakfast of Champions”  Saturday morning at Anthony’s Ocean View in New Haven. The event was sponsored by the Dan Orlovsky Foundation.

Xavier High School of Middletown, the Class LL champion and state’s
top-ranked team, was honored along with the three other state champions –
Masuk (Class L), Hillhouse (Class M) and St. Joseph of Trumbull (Class
S).

The state’s Coach of the Year award was given to Masuk's John Murphy, who guided the 13-0 Panthers to the South-West Conference and Class L state titles. In the state final, Masuk defeated New Canaan 50-20, ending the Rams' four-year state championship run.

 Other finalists included Tom Dyer (Hillhouse) and Sean Marinan (Xavier).

The state Player of the Year was awarded to Masuk junior quarterback Casey Cochran, who passed for 3,345 yards and 40 touchdowns for the Class L state champions.

Other finalists included Ansonia senior running back Montrell Dobbs and New Canaan running back Kevin Macari.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Larry Ciotti, former head coach at Daniel Hand High School who won five state titles during his 19 seasons (141-42-2 record).
