Staples Football Routs Trumbull, 38-16

Wreckers improve to 5-0 while the Eagles drop to 2-3 after their third straight loss

The Staples football team remained undefeated Friday with an impressive 38-16 victory over Trumbull, which completed a three-week gauntlet against three of the four undefeated teams in FCIAC play.

Joey Zelkowitz rushed for two touchdowns and sophomore quarterback Jack Massie also accounted for a pair of scores as the Wreckers improved to 5-0.

Zelkowitz, who rushed for 90 yards, staked the Wreckers to a 14-0 lead with TD runs of 15 yards in the first quarter and 8 yards in the second period.

Massie then tossed a 23-yard TD pass to James Frusciante to make it 21-0.

After Trumbull got on the board on Don Cherry's 13-yard TD, Robbie Wolf kicked a 24 yard field goal. Trumbull's Ryan Pearson answered with a 27-yarder to pull the Eagles within 24-10 at the half.

But Massie put away the contest with an 11-yard scamper in the third quarter. John Heil tacked on a 54-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to extend the Wreckers' lead to 38-10.

Trumbull got a meaningless late score on Quentin Brunetti's 19-yard TD pass to Rob Christiani.

Friday's loss denied Trumbull coach Bob Maffei his 100th win at the school. The Eagles' defeats during the losing streak have come against Greenwich, Trumbull and Staples.

Staples nows prepares for next week's showdown in Westport against fellow unbeaten Darien, which hosts Wilton on Saturday.
