Trumbull Football Rebounds From First Loss To Rout Danbury

Quarterback Ian Milne accounts for three touchdowns in 50-15 drubbing of Danbury

The Trumbull football team bounced back from its first loss of the season with a vengeance, routing Danbury, 50-15, Saturday afternoon.

The 50 points is a season-high for the Eagles (6-1), who rebounded from last week's 27-19 loss at Stamford to stay alive in the hunt for a state playoff berth.

Trumbull, which has a big game at Ridgefield next Friday, is sixth in the CIAC Class LL standings, and the top eight teams make the playoffs under the expanded format.

Perhaps still feeling the effects of last week's loss, the Eagles spotted the Hatters (2-5) a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on Austin Calitro's 26-yard touchdown run.

But Trumbull exploded for 29 unanswered points in the second quarter behind quarterback Ian Milne, who accounted for  three TDs in the period.

After Don Cherry's 1-yard TD run put the Eagles ahead, Milne tossed TD passes of 27 yards to Phil Terio and 10 yards to Tom Pauciello.

Milne then capped the second-quarter explosion with a 9-yard TD run that gave Trumbull a 29-6 halftime lead.

Any chance Danbury had of climbing back into the game ended when Terio returned the second-half kickoff 82 yards for a score.

Backup quarterback Brian Gallo then got into the act, scoring on a 15-yard run in the third quarter and tossing a 15-yard TD pass to Pauciello in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles face a rugged closing schedule. After next week's contest at Ridgefield, they host undefeated Staples  and traditional rival St. Joseph.
