Trumbull Girls Basketball Hammers Staples

Kelly Coughlin scores 16 points for Eagles in 47-28 win over the Wreckers

The FCIAC girls basketball standings have yet to be shaken as earned it's 15th consecutive league victory with a 47-28 win over Staples on Wednesday night in Westport.

The Eagles, who improved to 15-0 in the FCIAC and 16-1 overall,  have not lost since a 39-34 defeat at Masuk on Dec. 30.

"It's a good feeling," Trumbull Head Coach Steve Tobitsch said of the Golden Eagles'  accomplishments thus far this season.  But with three games left on the schedule,  there is still work to be done as they are trying to nail down the top seed for the FCIAC playoffs.

The Eagles used a 19-0 run spanning the first and second quarters Wednesday to turn an 8-6 deficit into a 25-8 halftime lead.

The absence of Staples' senior center forward Nicole Brill,  who was home sick, also gave Tobitsch's team an extra advantage.

The visitors fell behind early 4-0  before Kelly Coughlin’s 3-pointer cut the deficit to 4-3.

Staples took a  6-3 lead on Marykate VanSant's second layup before Trumbull tied it on Chontayvia Kennedy's 3-pointer.  Syd Houseworth’s basket gave the Wreckers their final lead.

Staples basically played the Eagles even in the third quarter as Trumbull took a 39-20 lead into the final period.

"They put us in a lull in the third quarter but we pulled out the victory," Tobitsch said.

Coughlin scored 16 points to pace the Eagles, who are back in action on Friday at Bassick.
