Sometimes it pays to break things. For much of this past track season, five members of the (THS) track team not only broke long-standing school track records, they earned All-FCIAC, All-State and All-New England honors.
Track team members Nick Lombardi, Mike Adinolfi, Keith Bond, Tim Johnson and Malcolm Connor traveled to the 66th New England Interscholastic Track & Field Outdoor Championship Meet in Burlington, Vt., recently and medaled in all three events in which they participated.
Adinolfi, Lombardi, Johnson and Bond took third place in the 4x100; Connor, Lombardi, Adinolfi and Bond took 2nd place in the 4x400 and Adinolfi took third place in the 300 hurdles.

It marked the first time the Eagles medaled in the New England Championships since 2000.
“At the start of the season I never thought we would go this far,” said Lombardi, a senior and co-captain of the team. “But it shows that if you work hard at practice and try your hardest, you can do anything.”

And the hard work paid off as during the season as Lombardi, Adiniolfi and Bond broke the school's 4x100 record.
Bond also broke the school's 400-meter record that hads stood since 1980. He joined track as a freshman as a way to stay in shape for soccer.
“I was using track as a way to build endurance and than I realized that it was really fun and I was pretty good at it,” said Bond, who remains on the soccer team.
Johnson, a sophomore who also competes in the 200-meter and 400-meter, ran as an alternate at the FCIAC’ in the 4x100 due to an injury by another runner and was a seamless addition to the relay team.
“I also joined the track team to stay in shape for soccer,” said Johnson, “and discovered that I really like to run, which was kind of a surprise for me.”
For Adinolfi, a senior, this was his first year on the track team and in that short amount of time he broke the school’s 300-hurdle mark.
“I wish I had started as a freshman,” said Adinolfi, ‘because I would probably had a lot more opportunities to run track in college."
Adinolfi said that this experience has made him realize that “you should try different things to see what you can do. You never know what you will be good at.”
And even though the New England meet required the boys to take a five-hour car ride and it rained throughout most of the events, the boys appreciated the experience.
“It took being there to really show us how far we had come,” Lombardi said.
As they look to next year’s season, the remaining team members remain positive.
“The seniors did so much this year and we will miss them a lot,” Johnson said, "but we will just have to step up, fill their places, and do it again.”
