Update: D.C. Teen Arrested for Murder of Former Intern For Rep. Jim Himes

Kevin Sutherland, of Trumbull graduated from American University. He was stabbed to death on a train in D.C.

Update: Police have arrested Jasper Spires, 18, on murder charges, according to police.

Trumbull native Kevin Sutherland, 24, was stabbed to death in Washington D.C. on July 4.

The afternoon attack on a Metro train in the city near NoMa-Gallaudet U station is believed to be the result of a robbery, according to D.C. Metropolitan Police.

Sutherland was found unconscious at the scene and had no signs of life, police said.

Police have issued an arrest warrant for D.C. teen Jasper Spires, 18. He was arrested on robbery charges July 2 and was released Friday, the day before the stabbing, according to the Washington Post.

Sutherland graduated from American University and majored in communications, law economics and government, according to his website. He graduated from Trumbull High School in 2009.

He worked as a digital political strategist for New Blue Interactive, according to his LinkedIn page.

His father Doug Sutherland ran for a state representative seat in Trumbull last year. Kevin wrote a letter to the editor in support of his father and said the two got involved in grassroots politics 10 years ago collecting signatures for a petition.

Sutherland also interned on two congressional campaigns for U.S. Rep. Jim Himes.

Himes wrote on Twitter that he was, “...absolutely heartbroken by the tragic loss of intern, staffer & wonderful friend, Kevin Sutherland. I’ve known few as selfless & decent.”

New Blue Interactive released the following statement about Sutherland:

“I am heartbroken as is the entire New Blue team to hear the news of Kevin’s passing. He was one of the brightest political digital strategists in the country and Kevin always had a smile. His murder was a tragedy and senseless. It robbed all of us of his amazing talents and future. We are shocked and saddened at this time. The entire New Blue team’s thoughts and prayers are with his entire family and friends during this difficult time. May he rest in peace. Please respect his family and our team’s privacy during this difficult time.”
