In high school basketball, there is no "March Madness" tournament to crown a national champion as there is in the college ranks.

However, Gannett's HighSchoolSports.net and USA Today will kick off their annual Ken Massey virtual national championship in April to determine the de facto No. 1 team in the country.

Sixty-four boys and girls teams -- 50 state champions and 14 at-large selections, including Connecticut Class LL boys winner St. Joseph - were chosen by USA Today.

Interestingly, the Cadets were picked over New London, which was voted the No. 1 team in the state.

USA Today sports editors seeded the bracket Thursday. Massey, a professor of mathematics at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn, will use his simulations to determine the winners for each round.

Massey's computer models were used to create the BCS rankings for college football in 1999.

"I think that it's only fair to crown a national champion, and with our unique ability using the Massey algorithm we feel that we can offer the most accurate and justified national champion, although the debate will rage on, just as the BCS rankings do in college," Jeff Mucci, product director at HighSchoolSports.net, said in a release.

The virtual national champion winner will be announced at 12 pm ET on April 12 at the following url: http://www. highschoolsports.net/Massey/NationalChampionship/Basketball/Varsity/Girls/2011/.

St. Joseph was seeded No. 10 in the East Region and will take on No. 7 North Port of Maryland in the first round.

HighSchoolSports.net will allow the fans to vote on the 'Massey People's Champion' throughout April. The team with the most votes will receive $250 toward its athletic department as well as the Massey People's Champ trophy. To vote,

"It is important to allow the fans to have a voice in the crowning of a virtual national champion," Mucci added.
