Victoria Pfohl and Erin Moore each scored 13 points as the Trumbull girls basketball team opened defense of its FCIAC title Wednesday with a 59-27 victory over Fairfield Ludlowe

Last year, defense was a trademark for the Eagles, who went undefeated in the FCIAC en route to earning the top seed in the Class LL state tournament and finishing with a 23-2 record.

Nancy Stablein, who could be the top player in the FCIAC, poured in 24 points Wednesday as the St. Joseph girls basketball team defeated Ridgefield 52-40 in the season opener for both teams.

Stablein was the only player in double figures for the Cadets, who defeated last season's FCIAC finalist and gave new coach Chris Lindwall a victory in his first game.

Lindwall, the former girls coach at Barlow and Fairfield University women's assistant, is taking over for longtime St. Joseph coach Joe Cavallaro.

Andrea Ferrero (17) and Emily Favorite (13) combined for 75 percent of Ridgfield's points.

The contest was close in the first half with with St. Joseph holding a 24-22 lead at the half. The Cadets then outscored the host Tigers 28-18 in the second half.

St. Joseph prevailed just shooting less than 50 percent from the foul line (12-of-33).
