Cadets Beat Central, 92-56

After a close call against Norwalk, the undefeated and top-ranked Stboys basketball team left nothing to chance against Bridgeport Central on Friday.

Timajh Parker scored 22 points as the Cadets cruised to a 92-56 victory over the Hilltoppers, who were defenseless to stop the Cadets. The 92 points was a season high for St. Joseph.

The Cadets were coming off a 50-45 victory over Norwalk on Wednesday.

On Friday, five players -- all the starters -- scored in double figures for the Cadets as Patrick Hopkins added 16, James Jennings 14 and Quincy McKnight
each chipped in with 14 and Jonathan Dzurenda contributed 10.

St. Joseph, which improved to 14-0 and 12-0, jumped out to a 24-11 after the first quarter and extended it 48-19 at the half. Hopkins also had 14 rebounds for the Cadets.

The Cadets continued their consistent play on offense, scoring 21 points in the third and 23 in the fourth to put away the 36-point victory.

Notre Dame of Fairfield freshman transfer Marcus Blackwell scored 21 points to pace the Hilltoppers, who dropped to 8-5, 8-5.

The boys basketball team suffered its third straight loss Friday, falling 53-52 at Trumbull.

The Cardinals dropped to 9-5 overall and 7-5 in the FCIAC while Trumbull improved to 7-7 and 6-6 in league play.

Alejandro Rodriguez scored 18 points to lead Trumbull, four coming on 3-pointers.

Sem Kroon scored eight points and Greg Donlic and C.J. Boyd each added seven for the Cardinals.

Sam Turner scored 16 points and Travis Fonseca added 13 to lead the Eagles, who held on after taking a 40-34 lead into the final period. Fonseca also had six assists.

Trumbull opened a 12-7 lead after the first quarter and extended it 31-20 at halftime.

The Greenwich girls basketball team gave Trumbull a tougher than expected battle before falling 45-34 at home on Friday.

Angie Jaramillo scored nine points and Jenny Cespedes added eight for the Cardinals, who dropped to 3-13 and 3-11.

Victoria Pfohl scored 15 points and Alexa Pfohl added 11 for the Eagles, who improved to 14-2 and 12-2. Victoria Pfohl also handed out six assists.

Trumbull jumped out to a huge 20-4 lead after the first quarter, but the Eagles had trouble putting the Cardinals away.

Greenwich outscored Trumbull 11-6 in the second quarter to pull within 26-15 at the intermission.

The Cardinals then outscored the Eagles 9-5 in the third period to draw within 31-24 after three periods. Trrumbull held on by outscoring Greenwich 14-10 over the final eight minutes.

The St. Joseph girls basketball team coasted to an easy 61-27 victory over Bridgeport Central on Friday.

Nancy Stablein scored 13 points for the Cadets, who improved to 13-3 overall and 11-3 in the FCIAC.

Jessica Jowdy added eight points, eight rebound and four assists for the Cadets, who were in control from the start,  building a 25-5 lead after the first quarter.

St. Joseph extended its lead to 37-11 at the half, then outscored the Hilltoppers 24-16 in the second half.

Timisha Graham had 16 points for Central, which dropped to 2-14 and 1-13.

With two weeks left in the regular season, St. Joseph is tied for third in the FCIAC standings, one game behind Trumbull.

The Trumbull boys hockey team scored three times in the third period to erase a one-goal deficit and defeat Greenwich 6-4 Saturday at the Shelton Rinks.

Michael Ahearn scored three goals and AJ DiMasi addd two for the Eagles, who improved to 10-5. Brendan Strobel had the other goal for Trumbull, which trailed 3-2 entering the third.  Ahearn also recorded a pair of assists.

Paul Macken scored twice and Brett Backman and William Waesche each tallied once for the Cardinals, who dropped to 3-12. Greenwich must win its final five games to make the state tournament.

Vinny Scorese made 11 saves for Greenwich and Matt Paolini stopped 29 shots for the Eagles. Despite the loss, the Cardinals outshot Trumbull by a 33-17 margin.
