The New Canaan boys hockey team hosts St. Joseph on Wednesday at the Darien Ice Rink (6 p.m.) in a rematch of last season's CIAC Division I state semifinal.
New Canaan was the best team in the state last season, rolling to a 25-0 record and the No. 1 ranking. They had beaten St. Joseph three times, including an overtime victory in the FCIAC championship game.
But in the state semifinals, their hearts were broken as they suffered a 6-5 loss to the Cadets, who went on to lose to Fairfield Prep in the finals. Once again, New Canaan was denied its first boys hockey state championship since 1972.
Pat Corcoran, who has graduated, scored a hat trick for St. Joseph while most of New Canaan's top players also have departed.
The Cadets are still 4-1, having won four in a row since a season-opening 6-2 loss to Glastonbury. They are coming off a 5-2 victory over Trinity Catholic on Friday.
With 18 players from last year's squad no longer around, the Rams are still trying to find their way at 2-3. They are coming off a 5-3 loss to second-ranked Hamden on Friday.
