Trumbull Scores and Standings: July 21

The Trumbull senior American Legion team routed South Windsor 12-2 on the road Wednesday to advance to the American Legion state tournament.

It was second win in as many days in the play-in tournament for Trumbull, which blanked Newington 2-0 on Tuesday.

The eight zone winners gained automatic berths into the 16-team double elimination tournament. The other eight teams were determined through a play-in tournament Tuesday and Wednesday.

Two other teams from Zone Four -- Norwalk and Stamford -won games Wednesday to also qualify. Greenwich, the first place, earned a automatic bid into the 16-team, double elimination tournament.

Trumbull faces Windsor Locks at Muzzy Field in Bristol at 3:30 after Norwalk takes on Niantic at 12:30 p.m.

In Middletown, Greenwich battles Bethel at 12:30, followed a contest between Stamford and defending American Legion state champion Branford at 3:30 p.m.

Trumbull will face Stamford in the championship game of the 15-year-old Babe Ruth state tournament on Thursday in New Milford at 5 p.m.

Stamford routed Tri-City-New London 15-2 on Wednesday to reach the final and will need to beat Trumbull twice to win the state title.

Stamford has won three straight games out of the loser's bracket after losing to Trumbull 9-5 in the semifinals of the winner's bracket.

 The Trumbull 11-year-old softball team opened play in the state tournament on Tuesday against district seven champion Rocky Hill.

In the other game in the four-team double elimination event, district five winner Bristol faced district eight winner Windsor Locks.

On Wednesday, the two winners and losers meet in Rocky Hill.

Trumbull's junior Legion team (20-7) is the 17th seed in the state tournament and will play at No. 16 Cheshire on Sunday at noon. The winner of that game will play at top seed Niantic on Monday 4 p.m.

Cheshire finished second in zone three with a 12-6 record. Niantic earned the No. 1 seed in the entire tournament with a 21-3 record in zone six.
