St. Joseph boys basketball Vito Montelli, who won a Connecticut-record 10th state title Saturday, sent a proposal to the CIAC basketball committee suggesting a tournament of champions, which would be played after the conclusion of the state tournaments.
According to Montelli's proposal, as many as eight teams could participate and the purpose would be to determine a definite No. 1 team in the state, as opposed to the current four class champions.

St. Joseph (23-2) finished No. 2 in the final New Haven Register poll behind New London, which capped off a 27-0 season by beating Northwest Catholic in the Class L title game. The Cadets defeated Fairfield Prep 79-53 to take the Class LL crown.
"The football season expanded one more week and went to more teams," Montelli told the Register. "All I'm asking is for one more week to put on an eight-team tournament. Why not prove it on the court? If we get our rear end kicked, that's fine.

"But after our game Saturday night, we definitely could have stayed with them (New London or Northwest Catholic.) It would have been unbelievable for the CIAC , especially after last weekend (the announced attendance for the New London-Northwest Catholic game was 9,566 at the Mohegan Sun Arena.) "
