Despite suffering its first loss of the season on Thursday to McMahon, the St. Joseph baseball team took over the top spot in this week's New Haven Register state top-10 poll.
The Cadets (13-1) flip-flopped with Pomperaug (12-2), last week's No. 1, which also lost.

There is, however, considerable disagreement among the media who the top team in the state is because St. Joseph, Pomperaug and No. 3 Branford (12-2) each received six first-place votes.
McMahon (12-2) climbed into the top 10 for the first time this season at No. 9. Amity (11-3) is fourth, followed by Staples (11-3), Berlin (10-2), Notre Dame-West Haven (10-4), Glastonbury (10-2), McMahon and East Catholic (10-1).

-- The Christian Heritage School softball team defeated the Harvey School of Katonah, N.Y. 12-3 on Thursday to improve to 5-0 in the Hudson Valley Athletic League.
Senior Olivia Cichon pitched six innings with 11 strikeouts to earn the win while senior Emily Boccarossa recorded two hits and drove in three runs for the Lady Kingsmen.
Christian Heritage School then followed up that victory with an 18-0 win over Oakwood Friends School of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Monday in a game called after six innings because of the mercy rule.
Olivia Cichon had five strikeouts in two innings and Sarah Bailey fanned 10 in four innings as the duo combined on a no-hitter.
Freshman shortstop Jess Cicerchia highlighted the offensive outburst with a grand slam.
-- Frank Piechota, a sophomore out of Trumbull High School, is a member of the Hartford men's lacrosse team that will be making its first appearance in the NCAA Division I tournament in school history.
Piechota has played in a team-high 12 goals this season, posting a 6-4-0 record with an 8.44 goals-against average and .546 save percentage.
The Hawks (11-6) will play at No. 2 seed Cornell (13-2) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the first round. The game will be televised by ESPNU.
Hartford clinched its first NCAA tourney berth in stunning fashion as the Hawks scored with one second remaining for an 11-10 victory over Stony Brook in the America East Conference title game.
