The St Joseph (19-3) baseball team has earned the top seed in the CIAC Class L state tournament and will host No. 32 seed Woodland (9-12) in a first-round game on Tuesday at 3:30 p,m.

Woodland needed to defeat Holy Cross 4-2 in a qualifying game on Saturday to earn a spot in the main draw.

If the Cadets advance, they would take on No. 16 Plainville (12-8) or No. 17 Grasso Tech (12-8) in the second round on Wednesday. The quarterfinals are set for Saturday.

St. Joseph, which was ranked No. 1 in the state during portions of the regular season, suffered a 7-6 loss to eventual champion Staples in the semifinals of the FCIAC tournament.  The Cadets made it interesting by scoring three runs in the botton of the seventh inning.

St. Joseph is seeking its fifth baseball state championship and first since 1985, when the Cadets defeated New London 13-3 in the Class M finals.
