A week after winning its first outright FCIAC championship, the Trumbull boys soccer team (14-1-4) begins play in the CIAC Class LL state tournament on Friday when the seventh-seeded Eagles host No. 26 New Milford (7-6-3) at 5 p.m.

A victory would send Trumbull into a second-round meeting with either No. 10 Simsbury or No. 23 Conard on Monday. As the higher seed, the Eagles also would host that contest.

Trumbull won the FCIAC title with a 2-0 victory over Staples on Friday, but wouldn't see the Wreckers, who are seeded 11th, again until the semifinals. A possible date with No. 2 seed Norwich Free Academy could await in the quarterfinals.

The St. Joseph girls soccer team shook a 4-1 loss to Greenwich in the semifinals of the FCIAC playoffs to rout No. 29 Killingly 8-1 Thursday in the first round of the Class M state tournament.

Sammi Grasso and Alyssa Christo each had two goals for the fourth-seeded Cadets (16-2-1), who will host No. 13 Griswold in the second round on Saturday at 2 p.m. Griswold advanced with a 2-1 win over No. 20 Windham.

Ariana Papaj, Claire Duffy, Samantha Murray and Cori Scales also scored for fourth-seeded St. Joseph, which built a 6-0 lead at the intermission.

The Trumbull girls volleyball team (8-11) dropped a 3-1 (25-15, 25-21, 20-25, 26-24) decison to FCIAC rival New Canaan in the first round of the Class LL tournament.

Marena Cruz had 15 digs and seven service points for the Eagles while Caitlyn Longwell added seven kills and 23 assists.

The Trumbull football team (2-5) looks to snap a five-game losing streak when the Eagles visit New Canaan on Friday in a 7 p.m. kickoff.

The Rams (7-1) could be in an agry mood as they are coming off a 36-29 loss to Stamford, their first defeat to the Black Knights since 1977.

New Canaan starting quarterback Matt Milano was knocked out of the game in the first quarter with what was described as bad headaches. His status for Friday is unclear.

St. Joseph (2-6) seeks its third win of the season at Trinity Catholic on Saturday (1 p.m.).

Jordan Vazzano tossed five touchdown passes last week as the Cadets routed Bassick, 50-18.

Vazzano, who completed 15-of-21 passes for 289 yards, connected with five different receivers for his TDs -- Mike Pulaski, Mark Hirschbeck, Jake Pelletier, Denzel Moscova and Shane Miller.

The Trumbull Touchdown Club will sponsor a tribute to former Eagles coaching legend Jerry McDougall on Saturday at Porky’s Cafe in Shelton (50 Center Street) from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.

McDougall, who coached football at Trumbull for more than 30 years, passed away last month at the age of 75. A $30 admission includes all-you-can eat wings, pizza and beverages. All proceeds will go to the new McDougall Scholarship started in his honor.

Checks can be mailed to The Trumbull Touchdown Club, attention: McDougall Scholarship, P.O. Box 110465, Trumbull, CT 06611. Payments also will be accepted at the door.

McDougall coached football at Trumbull from 1967-1998, winning 265 games, which was No. 1 all-time in the state when he retired. His teams captured three state championships and five FCIAC crowns.

Truly one of the state's coaching giants, McDougall is a member of both the National High School and Connecticut Hall of Fame.

McDougall also coached baseball at Trumbull and his teams won 510 games, nine division titles, three FCIAC titles and two Class LL championships in that sport. He also served as the school's athletic director and started Trumbull's successful wrestling program.

A three-sport star and captain at Bassick High School, McDougall played football, basketball and baseball at the University of Bridgeport. Starting in 1961, he spent six seasons as the football coach at Central Catholic before beginning his more-than 30-year tenure at Trumbull in 1967.
