McDougall coached football at Trumbull from 1967-1998, winning 265 games, which was No. 1 all-time in the state when he retired. His teams captured three state championships and five FCIAC crowns.
"He taught me everything I know about coaching, especially football, and helped me develop my philosophy of coaching to what it has become today," said Michael Herbst," Trumbull's athletic director. "
"People will talk about him as a legend of Trumbull High School, which he undeniably was, but few people knew how wonderful a human being he was also. The number of people, in and out of this town, he helped with life's problems was incredibly high but he never wanted anyone else to know about it."
Truly one of the state's coaching giants, McDougall is a member of both the National High School and Connecticut Hall of Fame.
McDougall also coached baseball at Trumbull and his teams won 510 games, nine division titles, three FCIAC titles and two Class LL championships in that sport. He also served as the school's athletic director and started Trumbull's successful wrestling program.
"When people think about Trumbull's athletic programs, they think of Jerry McDougall," Trumbull First Selectman Tim Herbst said. "Coach McDougall put Trumbull athletics on the map when he arrived here in the Trumbull Public School system more than four decades ago. As a coach, Jerry McDougall earned a reputation for being a fierce competitor who had the respect of his athletes and his fellow coaches.
"Coach McDougall did more than coach his athletes. He taught us about respect, teamwork, leadership and perseverance. He often spoke of Trumbull PADS: pride, attitude, desire and sacrifice. They are words that all of us have carried with us and applied to our life's work. I am proud to say that I played football for Coach Jerry McDougall."
A three-sport star and captain at Bassick High School, McDougall played football, basketball and baseball at the University of Bridgeport. Starting in 1961, he spent six seasons as the football coach at Central Catholic before beginning his more-than 30-year tenure at Trumbull in 1967.
St. Joseph boys basketball assistant Charles Clemons has been named the new head coach at Harding.
An assistant under Vito Montelli for the past five years, Clemons will be replacing a legend as he takes over for legendary Charlie Bentley, who retired in the summer after 34 years as the Presidents' mentor. Bentley won nine state championships at Harding.
Before joining Montelli's staff, Clemons spent 10 seasons as an assistant at Bridgeport Central.
The Trumbull boys soccer team climbed one spot into a tie for fifth in the latest Connecticut Soccer Coaches Association poll. The Eagles improved to 7-1-1 with a 2-0 win over St. Joseph on Monday.
The poll includes three FCIAC schools as Staples is ranked third while Norwalk is tied for seventh. Fairfield Prep debuted this week at No. 10.
Pomperaug, which tied Brookfield on Monday, again tops the poll with an 8-0-1 record. The Panthers are followed by South Windsor (9-0-0), Staples (7-0-2), Farmington (6-0-3), Wethersfield (7-1-0), Trumbull, Norwalk (7-1-1), Glastonbury (6-2-2), Simsbury (7-1-2) and Fairfield Prep (7-0-2)
