According to St. Joseph football coach Joe Della Vecchia, there is a four-way battle to replace his son at quarterback. The candidates are juniors Brett Olayos and Patrick Boyle and sophmores Christian Federici and Jordan Vazzano. Olayos is the son of St. Joseph athletic director Jim Olayos.
The younger Della Vecchia guided the Cadets to back-to-back Class S state championships and broke state records for touchdowns (85) and passing yardage (7,693) in a career.
The Cadets return only eight letterman, five of whom are seniors. They also lost versatile linenbacker/running back Tyler Matakevich.
Last season, Della Vecchia's son passed for 37 touchdowns and accounted for almost 3,800 yards of total offense.
The Cadets also graduated their top three receivers in Pat Mulligan (41 receptions for 875 yards and 13 TDs), Jerry Kramer (39-702-6) and Quinn Irwin (40-674-4).
They have a lot of offense to replace, but one player to watch is senior Joe Burns, a big-play receiver who caught 21 passes for 479 yards and seven scores last season.
"We just got to learn the speed of the game a little bit," coach Della Vecchia said. Most of our players were JV players last year so it's a lot different now, so we got a long way to go."
