Herbst: Trumbull Seniors Using Other Town Senior Centers

A recent analysis revealed that more Trumbull residents use outside facilities than Trumbull's own senior center.

TRUMBULL, CT- A recent analysis by Trumbull revealed that more of the town's senior citizens are using outside senior centers than the actual Trumbull center.

First Selectman Tim Herbst said he plans to address the issue surrounding the need for a new senior center in his State of the Town address. The address will be March 31 at Tashua Knolls Restaurant at noon.

Trumbull Senior Center Director Jean Fereira indicated that there are 300 regular users of Trumbull's senior center and that some of the users are from outside of town.

"This doesn’t occur with our schools, our golf course and our parks and recreational programming and senior services and programming should be no exception," Herbst said in an email. "If this doesn’t underscore the need for a new center that focuses on improved and enhanced programming, I do not know what else does."

Demographic data from the Southwest Connecticut center on Aging predicts that 25 percent (9,000 people) of Trumbull's population will be over 65-years-old by 2019 and 37 percent (13,300) will be over the age of 55.
