The girls basketball team survived a huge scare Monday, holding off No. 25 seed Bristol Eastern 39-37 in the first round of the Class LL state tournament.
Amanda Pfohl, who scored eight points, hit the winning basket for the eighth-seeded Eagles (20-4) with seven seconds remaining.

The win sets up a second-round matchup with No. 9 Newtown on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Nighthawks advanced with a 71-41 rout of No. 24 Amity.
Victoria Pfohl scored 14 points to pace Trumbull, which led 23-19 at halftime and 28-27 entering the fourth quarter in a tightly played contest. Alexa Pfohl added nine points for the Eagles.

The win leaves Trumbull one game from a possible rematch with undefeated Danbury (24-0) in the quarterfinals. The top-seeded Hatters, who defeated
Trumbull in the FCIAC championship game, reached the second round with a 64-34 drubbing of New Milford.
Kadijah Shoultz scored 15 points to pace Bristol Eastern, which finished with an 11-10 mark.

Jess Jowdy picked up the slack in Nancy Stablein's absence.
Jowdy scored 26 points Monday as the St. Joseph girls basketball team held on to defeat No. 26 seed Westhill 57-47 in the first round of the Class LL state tournament.
Stablein, the Cadets' leading scorer, suffered a torn ACL in St. Joseph's loss to Stamford in the FCIAC quarterfinals and is lost for the remainder of the season.
St. Joseph, the No. 8 seed, improved to 18-4 and will host No. 10 seed Mercy of Middletown in the second round on Thursday at 7 p.m.. Mercy advanced with a 52-37 win over Stamford.
Lauren DellaVecchia scored 10 points and Jenn Vazquez added eight points and eight rebounds for the Cadets, who built a 38-15 halftime lead.
Megan D'Alessandro had 21 points and eight rebounds for the Vikings (10-11), who sliced the lead to nine early in the fourth quarter.
Erin Johnson grabbed nine rebounds for St. Joseph while Steph Roones added 13 points for Westhill.

After St. Joseph was stunned by Bridgeport Central in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC quarterfinals, Hillhouse has taken over the No. 1 spot in the New Haven Register boys basketball state media poll.
The Academics, who improved to 22-0 with Monday's 62-46 win over Lyman Hall in the semifinals of the SCC playoffs, garnered all 17 first-place votes.
New London (19-2) climbed one spot to No. 2 while previous No. 1 St. Joseph (20-1) dropped two notches to No. 3.
Windsor (21-1) is fourth, followed by Hartford Public (22-0), Career (21-2), Northwest Catholic (20-2), Crosby (19-2), Enfield (21-0) and Fairfield Prep (19-3), which was unranked last week.
Career defeated Fairfield Prep 73-53 in the SCC semifinals Monday and will play Hillhouse for the title on Tuesday at Quinnipiac.
Among other FCIAC teams, Trinity Catholic (16-5), Bassick (16-5) and Bridgeport Central (12-8) are receiving votes.
