Seeking an 11th state title in school history and second straight, the St. Joseph boys basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Class LL state tournament on Monday with a 56-37 victory over Ridgefield.
While the Cadets earned the right to play at home as the top-ranked seed, the contest was moved to Fairfield Warde to accommodate a larger crowd.
Ridgefield, which reached the semifinals last season for the first time in school history, finished the year at 18-6.

St. Joseph, which improved to 23-1, will face No. 5 New London in the semifinals on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. The Whalers advanced with a 79-73 double overtime victory over No. 5 Windsor.
New London moved up to Class LL after winning the Class L state championship last year. St. Joseph defeated the Whalers 57-52 in the Northeast Basketball Classic on Dec. 28.

In the other half of the draw, No.6 seed Fairfield Prep faces No. 2 Hillhouse. Last season, the Jesuits lost to St. Joseph in the state finals at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

The Trumbull boys hockey team advanced to the finals of the Division II state tournament Monday with a 7-3 victory over top seed Guilford at the Ingalls Rink.
Trumbull, the fifth seed, improved to 16-9 and will take on No. 7 Branford in the finals on Friday at Ingalls at 7:30 p.m. Branford advanced with a 5-3 win over North Branford.
Guilford finished the season at 12-8-2.
In their only previous state finals appearance, the Eagles lost to Farmington 5-4 in double overtime in 2005. The winning goal was scored by Nick Bonino, who is currently playing for the Anaheim Ducks.
