The St. Joseph and girls basketball teams were eliminated Thursday as both suffered losses at home in the second round of the Class LL state tournament.

Trumbull, which was looking ahead to a possible rematch with Danbury in the quarterfinals, fell to No. 9 seed Newtown 57-48 while St. Joseph dropped a 54-37 decision to No. 10 seed Mercy.

Newtown, however, took control in the fourth period, outscoring the Eagles 18-9 to advance to the round of eight to take on the undefeated Hatters, who improved to 25-0 with a 56-46 victory over Sacred Heart Academy.

Erin Kenning led three players in double figures for Newtown with 15 points while Bridget Power added 12 and Jessica Lynch contributed 10 for the Nighthawks.

Jessica Jowdy scored nine points and Chloe Dudzinski grabbed 10 rebounds for the seventh-seeded Cadets, who finished the year at 18-5 and could not overcome the absence of leading scorer Nancy Stablein for a second straight game.

Stablein, who averaged more than 18 points, suffered a torn ACL in St. Joseph's loss to Stamford in the FCIAC playoffs and was lost for the season.

Jordyn Nappi scored 18 points and Maria Wesleyj added 15 for Mercy, which opened a 26-19 halftime lead and slowly pulled away in the second half.

The Tigers improved to 19-5 and will take on No. 15 East Catholic in the quarterfinals. East Catholic shocked No. 2 Lauralton Hall 45-43 on Thursday.

Trumbull's Ben Anderson will compete in the New England wrestling championships this weekend in Providence.

Last week, the senior finished second in the 138-pound weight class at the state Open championships.

The Trumbull boys hockey team will take on Westhill in the final of the FCIAC's tier two playoffs on  Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Terry Conners Rink in Stamford.

The contest will precede the tier one final between Darien and Ridgefield, which gets under way at 6 p.m.

The Eagles advanced with a 3-1 win over Fairfield last week while Westill defeated Stamford 4-1 to reach the tier two final, which featured the seventh- through 10th-place teams in the FCIAC standings.

Brendan Strobel, Michael Ahearn and Brandon Elbert scored for Trumbull (12-9), which has qualified for the Division II state tournament.

Neal Smolinski scored two goals and Ryan Silk and Lukas Znosko each added one for Westhill (6-12-2), which will be playing its final game of the season on Saturday.

Trumbull will be looking to avenge a 5-4 overtime loss to the Vikings earlier in the season.

Ahearn is Trumbull's leading scorer this season with 24 goals and 22 assists for 46 points while Strobel (15-11-26) and Tim Riley (10-13-23) also have double-figure goals.
