The top-seeded seeded boys basketball team opened a bid for its second consecutive Class LL state championship Tuesday with a 59-38 win over Shelton.
Quincy McKnight scored 20 points and Timajh Parker added 18 for the Cadets, who improved to 21-1 and will host No. 17 Cheshire in the second round on Thursday. Cheshire advanced with q 72-52 victory over Stamford.
For the second straight season, St. Joseph is hoping to win a state title after getting upset by the No. 8 seed in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC playoffs.

After completing only the second undefeated regular season in Vito Montelli's 50 years as coach, the Cadets were stunned by Bridgeport Central, 62-58.
Last season, St. Joseph recovered from a loss to Stamford in the FCIAC playoffs to win the school's 10th state championship.

Also on Tuesday, the Trumbull boys basketball team stunned No. 7 Crosby 58-52 in Waterbury. The Eagles advanced to a second-round meeting against No. 10 Manchester (16-5), which defeated Greenwich 80-65 on Tuesday.
In boys hockey, Trumbull routed Watertown-Pomperaug 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Division II state tournament against Wilton, which edged New Milford 2-1 on Tuesday.
