Trumbull Suffers Tough Loss In Babe Ruth World Series

Sarasota, Fla, scores three runs in the top of the seventh for an 8-5 victory over Trumbull, which can still advance to the quarterfinals with a win over Centralia, Wash., on Wednesday

Southeast Regional champion Sarasota, Fla., scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday to snap a tie and defeat Trumbull 8-5 in the 13-15 Babe Ruth World Series in Jamestown, N.Y.

Kyle Washburn scattered four hits over five innings to earn the win in relief for Sarasota, which improved to 3-0 in pool play.

Sarasota's seventh-inning rally began with a walk to Tyler Leonard, followed by a single by Jake Mavrikas. Jared Pruett laid down a sacrifice bunt and Zach McMullen followed with a sacrifice fly. Consecutive pinch-hit singles by Sam Dannheisser and Michael Marquez gave Sarasota all the cushion it would need.

Trumbull put the first two runners on base to start the bottom of the seventh inning against Washburn, but Kade Hunkapiller came on to retire the last two batters to earn the save.

McMullen opened the scoring for Sarasota in the top of the first when he smacked a two-run triple to highlight a three-run rally.

Trumbull responded with four runs in the second inning, spearheaded by an RBI single by Vincent Ciambriello and a fielder's choice by Colin Keyes.

Sarasota regained the lead in the third when McMullen had an RBI single and Hakeem Rhodes drilled an RBI double. An error in the bottom of the fourth pulled Trumbull into a 5-5 tie.

Ciambriello had two of Trumbull's four hits. Tim Keckler took the loss for the New England Region champions, who dropped to 1-2 heading into Wednesday's pool finale against Centralia, Wash.

That game will decide the final playoff participant in the National Division. Centralia (1-2) defeated host Jamestown on Tuesday for its first win in the tournament.

Sarasota and Tri-Township, Pa. (3-0) also will play on Wednesday for the National Division group championship and a bye into the semifinals.
