Trumbull's Tim Herbst Says State Treasurer Opponent Should Find Other Line of Work

The comment came after 16-year incumbent Denise Nappier canceled the day of the only scheduled debate.

With less than four weeks until the election it looks like Trumbull First Selectman Tim Herbst won’t get the five debates he wanted in his bid for state treasurer; at this rate he would be lucky to get one.

Herbst was scheduled to debate 16-year democratic incumbent Denise Nappier Tuesday night, but Nappier backed out Tuesday morning and cited personal reasons.

“For Ms. Nappier to withdraw on the morning of our first and only debate gives me great cause for concern,” Herbst said in a statement Tuesday. “I understand Ms. Nappier is citing ‘personal reasons’ for her absence, and my hope is that whatever they are she is able to overcome them and join me in the remaining 29 days to discuss the critical issues facing our state.”

Nappier campaign spokeswoman Rose Ryan told the Courant that the campaign hoped to schedule a debate before the election.

Nappier said during a New Haven Register editorial board meeting that she did want to debate Herbst. The Herbst campaign called it smoke and mirrors.

Herbst showed-up to the scheduled debate Tuesday night and used it as an opportunity to a hold a question and answer forum for voters. Herbst said that Nappier should find another line of work if she is unwilling to face the public or the media, the Courant reports.
