Overtime was looming for theboys hockey team, which had squandered a four-goal lead and was facing the prospect of a third straight defeat.

But Matt Julian rescued the Cadets, scoring with just 15 seconds left in regulation to give them a wild 6-5 victory over Greenwich at the Shelton Rinks.

Christian Keator (two goals and two assists) and Julian (one goal and three assists) had four-point nights for the Cadets, who improved to 5-3.

But they almost went for naught, as Greenwich stormed back from a 4-0 deficit early in the second period.

Sophomore Brett Backman sparked the comeback for the Cardinals with a hat trick. He is the younger brother of former Yale star Sean Backman, who is currently playing for the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

The loss was the fifth straight for the Cardinals, who dropped to 1-7. Four of their defeats during the streak have come by one goal, including the last three.

Even though the first period was even territorially with each team generating 10 shots, St. Joseph built a 3-0 lead.

After Keator, who had two goals and two assists, opened the scoring, the Cadets hurt the Cardinals with their special teams.

John Ferguson scored a shorthanded goal and Troy Deering added a power-play tally to give St. Joseph its three-goal lead after the first period.

Keator tallied his second goal of the night 1:24 into the middle period, and the rout appeared to be on.

But freshman Decker Curran's goal on a breakaway started the comeback at 3:12. Backman and Paul Macken then scored less than a minute apart to bring Greenwich within 4-3 with seven minutes left in the second period.

St. Joseph's Andrew Gore scored 12 seconds later to slow the Cardinals' momentum, but Backman found the back of the net twice in the first 5:13 of the third period to tie the game at 5-5.
