TRUMBULL, CT — A major winter storm is barreling toward Connecticut Sunday into Monday, with the possibility of a foot or more of snow amid nasty, biting cold, according to the latest weather forecasts.


Local Weather

Southern Connecticut is expected to get between eight and 14 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. Sleet may mix in with the snow in southern areas of the state, reducing the total accumulation, the National Weather Service said. Coastal Connecticut is expected to get the lower end of the range.

A winter storm watch is in effect for early Sunday through Monday afternoon.

Travel is expected to be difficult, with hazardous road conditions and reduced visibility, and the National Weather Service advises delaying any travel if possible.

While Saturday is currently expected to be mostly sunny and cold, the latest forecast as of Friday morning calls for snow on Sunday starting around 1 a.m.

The snow could be heavy at times. High near 25. Northeast wind 5 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches possible, according to the forecast.

In light of this weekend's impending storm, the town urges Trumbull residents to sign up for the Town Emergency Community Information on the Trumbull Citizen Alert system.

According to the town website, this emergency and community notification system enables the town of Trumbull to provide important community notifications and essential information quickly in a variety of situations, such as severe weather, unexpected road closures, evacuation of buildings or neighborhoods, and other emergency situations.

The Trumbull Office of Emergency Management has also provided a list of winter storm preparation resources, which can be viewed here, and the town website also provides a list of extreme heat or cold information.


Transfer Station Closed

According to an announcement Friday on the town website, the Trumbull transfer station will be closed on Monday, Jan. 26, "in anticipation of the impending snowstorm."


School Cancelations

As of Friday morning, Trumbull Public Schools has not announced any school closures for Monday, Jan. 26. If a cancelation or delay is announced, it should be posted to the district's website and/or social media.


Trumbull Snow Challenge: Let’s Get Creative!

While many across the country brace themselves for the predicted snowstorm, Parks and Recreation encourages Trumbull residents to have some and turn their yards into an outdoor art gallery.

"Whether you're a master sculptor or having fun with the kids, we want to see what you can create," the town website reads. "We are officially launching the Trumbull Snow Sculpture Showdown, and we want YOU to join the fun."

Here's how to enter:

  • Build: Bundle up and head outside to create your best snow masterpiece (classic snowmen, animals, local landmarks—anything goes!).
  • Snap: Take a photo of your creation and email it to arts@trumbull-ct.gov
  • Deadline: Wednesday, Jan. 28th (5 p.m. est.)

All photos emailed will be posted to the Parks and Recreation social media accounts for public comment and voting, so by emailing a photo the participant agrees to that process, according to the town website.
