Battery Power at Rockville High School

The reasons for having a week specifically designed for pitching and catching.

With the high school baseball and softball season right around the corner, coaches and players are getting ready for the start of a new season. The offseason has come to a close, which means coaches can start holding practice and workouts with their players.

Coaches are not able to hold practices with their players during the offseason so players have to hold themselves accountable for keeping their skills sharp.  For pitchers and catchers, the offseason is a great time to fine-tune certain skills to improve on their games.  Rockville High School softball coach Frank Levick said that for his catchers, he asks them to do a lot of resistance band training to strengthen their shoulder muscles and wrists for blocking and throwing drills.

For his pitchers, Levick said that they typically need to work out at least four times a week to stay on top of their games.  These workouts keep all their pitches working the way they want to whether it’s a screwball or a curve-ball.

The Rockville High School Assistant Baseball Coach Greg Caron agrees with Levick that the pitchers and catchers training week is very beneficial for the team during spring training.

“It just gives these guys a head start on loosening up their arms,” said Caron. “It is a long season and it is a nice way to ease them back into the swing of things.”

Caron also said that the time set aside for pitchers and catchers were extremely useful for the young pitchers on the team to work on their mechanics.

The coaches are not able to work with the pitchers on pitching during the off-season so most pitchers and catchers have individual instructors that they work with year-round, Levick said.  Coaches are able, however, to hold workouts for agility and strength conditioning.

“The only thing I can do with the girls in the off-season is strength and agility work,” Levick said. “We do lots of sit ups, push-ups, leg raises, numerous footwork drills with banana hurdles and rope ladders which I believe are a great key to our success last year when I had a very young team.”

The Rockville baseball team kicks off the season on April 6, with a 4:45 p.m. game at in Plainville.  The Ram softball team starts its their season on that same day and time with a home game against Plainville.
