Driver Charged With DUI After HOV Lane 'Swale' Maneuver: Report

An accused drunken driver was charged after a dangerous maneuver on I-84, police said.

VERNON, CT — An accused drunken driver used the "swale" bordering the HOV lane to pass a another vehicle in front of a state trooper over the weekend and was arrested as a result, a report indicates.

The incident took place at 10:13 p.m. Saturday on the westbound side of Interstate-84 In Vernon, according to a report.

A trooper on routine patrol noticed a white Infiniti use the 'swale' bordering the high occupancy vehicle lane to pass a car in the left travel lane, according to the report. The trooper activated his lights and siren and the Infiniti sped up, according to a report.

The Infiniti eventually was pulled overt on the right-hand shoulder, according to a report.

The driver, 55-year-old Rafael Ricardo Almario, of Manchester, was charged with driving under the influence, drincing and driving and improper passing, a report indicates.

He is due in court on Nov. 25, state police said.
