VERNON, CT — It is likely that emergency sensors installed at Rockville High School some time ago prevented potential major damage to the building early Monday morning.

The school was closed as workers scrambled to repair a pair of leaky pipes. One was in the main boiler room and another in a tunnel system underneath the school, officials said.

RHS principal Jason Magao said the sensors alerted school officials to the problem at 1:15 a.m. and the school was closed as a precaution. Parents received calls at 5:30 a.m.

Superintendent of Schools Joseph Macary said both pipes had broken, but, as of 9:30 a.m., RHS was "back to normal operations." Classes will be back in session Tuesday, he said, and all outdoor athletic practices were on. The volleyball teams had away games anyway.

The day will be counted as a "snow day," for the high school Macary said, using the easiest way to classify it.

Adult education classes were on as of noon.

"We have water at the school," Macary said.

The five elementary schools and Vernon Center Middle School had classes as usual.
