Local softball players are teaming up to fight cancer this weekend.
It's all part of the second-annual Fastpitch for a Cure, an event on June 1 at Vernon Center Middle School from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Players will participate in multiple games throughout the day in an effort to raise money and awareness for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
Vernon, Coventry, Middletown, Simsbury and Somers are among the towns participating.
Organizers of the event said Fastpitch for a Cure was started in 2011 by a volunteer "who thought it would be a great idea to find a way for the girls to give to charity." The Vernon Little League Board of Directors approved it.
Some players were affected by breast cancer, so the Susan G. Komen Foundation was chosen as the first charity. This year, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network - www.pancan.org - was picked since some of the girls have been affected by the disease as well.
The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is sending representatives so donations can be made directly to the charity.
A silent auction will be featured.
The snack shack will be open all day to serve snacks, drinks, hot dogs, and burgers. Fastpitch Nation will be there with merchandise for sale.
There will be a clown and a moon bounce for the youngsters
At about noon, Life Star helicopter is slated to fly in and stay for an hour or so.
Pack Leaders Dog Rescue of Manchester is slated to attend as well.
