It's Scarecrow Contest Time Again at Vernon's Strong Family Farm

The scarecrows have become a fall tradition in Vernon.

VERNON, CT — It's time again for the Strong Family Farm scarecrow contest.

The contest is entering its fifth year and has become a fall tradition in Vernon. Residents fashion the scarecrows along various themes and place them along the fence bordering the farm on Peterson Road.

Strong Family Farm is an agriculture education center located at 274 West St. — at the corner of Peterson Road and West Street.

Eligibility

The fifth-annual Scarecrow Contest is open to all ages, families, clubs, groups & businesses. Each family or group may only enter one time.

Categories:

  • Family Entries – Traditional, Whimsical, Fairytale, Humorous, Fantasy, Celebrity, etc. Design a scarecrow depicting a favorite fairy tale, storybook, animal or fantasy figure and let the imagination run wild. Use of bright colors or unique materials is encouraged. Note: Anyone using papier-mâché, be sure it is sealed to protect it from the elements.
  • Adult Groups – The division is open to adult groups – organized or a group of friends.
  • Youth Groups – The division is open to children younger than 14. An adult may assist younger children,
  • but the majority of the work must be completed by children.
  • Business – Businesses may display an advertisement sign with their name and logo not to exceed 11-by-17 inches.
  • Traditional (any age, individual or group, or business) – “Most Likely to Scare a Crow.” That includes typical farm and garden scarecrows made from cast-off clothing, burlap, gunny sacks, jeans, overalls, straw hats, aprons, bonnets, corn shocks, raffia, straw, etc.

Blue Ribbons and award certificates will be given to the winner of each category at the String Farm Harvest Festival, scheduled for Oct. 15.

A separate “Farmer’s Choice” award will be voted on by the Strong family.

There is no cost to enter the contest and sign-ups will continue until all fence posts are assigned.
