Multiple Bear Sightings Reported in Vernon

Multiple black bear sightings have been reported in Vernon over the past several days, police said.

VERNON, CT – Multiple black bear sightings have been reported to authorities in Vernon over the past several days, police said.

Police said the sightings have occurred "all over town," and they specifically mentioned an area stretching from Loveland Hill Road to Kelly Road.

A little past Loveland Hill heading toward the Rockville section of town, along Regan Street near Swiss Cleaners, a black bear was captured with a camera frolicking on a patio by resident Jackie Ludden.

Police said anyone encountering the bear should keep a safe distance and referred to state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection guidelines.

  • Observe bears from distance.
  • Make noise if you need to encourage them to leave your yard or to get them out of your way in outdoor settings like hiking and camping.
  • If bear is seen in populated or heavily trafficked area or if the animal is acting boldly, call local police or talk to animal control officer. In case of true emergency situation call DEEP at 860-424-3333.
  • Secure garbage can lids and try to prevent access for bears.
  • Clean your outdoor grill grease traps - bear love to pry them loose and lick the drippings.
