VERNON, CT — The latest installment of the Picture Vernon series takes us to the 1950s and a parade in the Rockville section of town.

The float was promoting more schools in "both" Vernon and Rockville, according to the Vernon Historical Society. It was a product of the times after World War II, when and influx of families combined with a baby boom to produce a local population surge involving school-aged children.

A note on the float touts 300 grade school children in town. Center Road School alone now has about 200 more elementary students than that.
