Picture Vernon: A Local Shopping Plaza, 1970s Style

VERNON, CT — The latest installment of the Picture Vernon series takes us back to the mid-1970s and a shopping trip to Tri-City Plaza.

The black-and-white photo is from the Vernon Police Department records division and was taken during an investigation on June 25, 1975. Tri-City Plaza is located in the Vernon Circle area, named as such because, back then, the interchange of routes 30 and 83 was actually a circle.

The rotary was replaced years ago with the traffic light system currently in use.

Notice the Finest Supermarket and the Sage Allen department store. In 2023, the supermarket, now a ShopRite, is at the other end while three TJX Companies-owned stores are at the former Finest end.
