Picture Vernon: A Milestone Celebrated

VERNON, CT — The latest installment of the Picture Vernon series takes us back to 1958 and Downtown Rockville. It's Vernon's 150th anniversary parade.

Leading the formation is Sgt. Lester Bartlett, a member of the then-Rockville Police Department. It was before the merger with the Vernon PD.

On the far left behind Bartlett is Vernon Officer George McDonald. The other cops are not identified. The photo was dug out of the VPD Records Division archives.

The strange-looking street lights had been installed just prior to the parade and represented the latest in municipal lighting technology, police said.
