Public Hearing Set on Former Salvation Army Store Purchase

A public hearing on a possible purchase by the town of the former Salvation Army store in Rockville has been scheduled for Oct. 6.

The 1-acre parcel, which includes a commercial building, a detached garage and a parking lot, is at 166 Union Street, across from the Maple Street School. It has been vacant since May 2014.

The property is being offered to the town for $165,000, and improvements will cost another $85,000, according to a public notice of the hearing.

According to the meeting notice, the facility would “provide secure and environmentally acceptable storage area for permanent and sensitive information,” and the parking lot would serve as “a solution to the required space needed at the Town Hall complex for municipal vehicles stored when not in use, along with large equipment periodically utilized by the public works department.”

On Monday, the Vernon Board of Education voted 7-1 in favor of endorsing the purchase.

The hearing is slated for 7:35 p.m. in the third floor Town Council Chambers at 14 Park Place.
